My art and music is a vital and evolving part of my life in Scotland
Swash is an artform derived from nature that uses colour within a contemporary environment of digital design. Andrew Hennessey is from the tradition of the Scottish colourist and modernist and sees the essence of life as awash with the swirl of colour – colours living vividly in the Scottish mountains and seascapes. Swash, in geography, is a turbulent layer of water that washes up on the beach after an incoming wave has broken. The swash action can move beach material up and down on the beach, which results in the cross-shore sediment exchange – in Swash by Andrew Hennessey we are looking at the refraction of waves of colour and light as they interact with our digital vista and imagination.

Startan was invented on the 10th of October, 2007AD by Andrew Hennessey of Outshore Multimedia, Edinburgh and builds on the tradition in Scottish Arts for the use of bold colour and design. Startan presents Traditional tartan ‘Setts’ or colour ratios in a more informal, fluid and designed way. The traditional Scottish patriarch may well disagree with the design virtues of Startan … but then after centuries of opportunity to produce his own informal revisions – he still doesn’t seem to appreciate the gentle side of disorder. The box girder approach to fashion and social design is maybe good for the many male engineers that Scotland is so proud of – but then women don’t always want to look like they are wearing the draft design for one of the many block houses that Scottish architects regularly turn out. Startan provides a new vehicle for a more Universal use of tartan in every kind of fashion setting.
‘A Tour of Scotland’ by Andrew Hennessey is the essential taster to the Scottish travel experience. In pictures, words and digital art by Scottish photographer, poet and colourist Andrew Hennessey you are taken a tour round the very idea of what it is to be Scottish. ‘A Tour of Scotland’ distils the fine and ancient Scottish spirit into a potent and enlightening experience that will make you want to be there to see it all for yourself !!
Earthlight contains the original Celtic and Medieval manuscript compositions and songs of Andrew Hennessey from 1984-1991AD. The Solan Company was formed in 1984 to present Celtic and World music through the medium of original work. The various shows were played at and around the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe.
My book of Scottish Compositions is my second after Earthlight, and is inspired by my eclectic journey through Scottish culture – travels that have embraced the traditional folk music from Scotland and Ireland and the Continent and also the Neo Classical. I hope that you get a flavour for many of the milestones in my own personal pilgrimmage and that these tunes connect you with those Scottish roots that I discovered on the way.
